Causes of

Head Lice

If you learn what causes head lice, you can know what to avoid!

What Causes Head Lice?

When diving into the world of head lice, it's essential to understand the full picture. Asking ‘what causes head lice?’ is just the beginning. The cause of head lice is simple: they love our hair (and scalp)!

Contrary to belief, head lice are NOT caused by being unhygienic. While many believe that lice caused by or a sign of poor hygiene, that's just a lousy myth!

No matter how clean or dirty your hair is, head lice love it all the same. Surprised? Learn more about head lice and nits with our head lice fact sheets!

The real question to ask is, ‘how do head lice spread?’ It's a combination of our social behaviours and the lice's natural instincts. As they move from one head to another, they're not just looking for food (your blood); they're seeking the ideal environment to lay their eggs and continue their lifecycle (your hair).

While the way head lice spread varies somewhat, the outcome is usually the same: an itchy situation that requires immediate attention.

By understanding both the cause of head lice and their rapid spread, we're better equipped to prevent and treat these pesky invaders.

Head-To-Head Contact

Head lice primarily spread through head-to-head contact. Kids huddling together for a story, a selfie, or just some gossip? A perfect setup for lice to crawl on to the next head.

Sharing Hair Items

Sharing is caring, but not when it comes to hats, hairbrushes, combs, hair accessories, or even pillows. These can be a lice's ticket to a new home if they make it within a couple of days.

Contact With Bedding

The lousy critters are able to live away from their human host’s heads for around 48 hours and can spread through contact with bedding, as they can easily crawl onto sheets and pillowcases, allowing easy access to individuals who share the same sleeping environment.

Spotting the Unwanted Guests

Lice are sneaky. They're small, wingless, and have a knack for hiding in plain sight. Their eggs, or nits, are often mistaken for dandruff at first glance, but unlike dandruff, these clingy critters stick to the hair shaft and won't budge easily.
